Devon has been an attraction to people for millennia, not long after the last Ice age ended, Dartmoor was one of the first places visit in Britain by Stone Age settlers. Historically Devonshire has many splendid buildings and sites where you can take a leisurely stroll, drinking in the history and sampling bygone ages. Locations like Buckland Abbey, where Sir Francis Drake once lived or Buckfast Abbey with its relieving tonic wine. Oakhapton and Drago castles, or one of the world’s largest glasshouses at Bicton Park are all within easy reach to enjoy.
Literary geniuses have often set their tales, heroes and heroines in Devon. Lorna Doone on Exmoor and Tarka the Otter are landscapes to visit as much as stories. What good pirate tale doesn’t start with a ship sailing from a Devon port? The cobbled streets of Clovelly and its 14th century harbour, Dartmouth and Westward Ho all feature in literary masterpieces.
